Extra Challenge goes to Las Haciendas


It was no simple life for international stars Ruffa Gutierrez, Donita Rose, and Jasmine Trias when they visited the pristine and unspoiled nature of Las Haciendas Resort Farm. Not knowing what they were up to, the socialites hopped on the Extra Challenge helicopter that took them to their destination: a sprawling piece of property in Laurel, Batangas.

Extra Challenge is a reality-based TV show on GMA-7 patterned after American reality series like Survivor, Fear Factor, and the Amazing Race. Despite the similarity, it offers distinctively Filipino-style challenges. For example the Bahay-Bahayan, Balsa-balsahan episode featured challengers playing the role of parents to children who live in a balsa (small boat). In addition, instead of unknown individuals, celebrities join as the challengers.

The most recent episode, titled “Promdi: Walang Ganyan sa States,” tested the challengers’ personal endurance and patience. The three experienced what it was like to live in a farm, not as owners, but as farmers and ordinary dwellers.

It saw Ruffa, former Miss World 2nd Princess, dirty her manicured hands to plow the rice fields with the help of a carabao. Meanwhile, Batangueños witnessed how Donita, MTV Asia VJ, shed tears as she tried catching chickens inside a pen. American Idol finalist Jasmine got a taste of the natural waterfalls of Las Haciendas when she rappelled down the 200 feet falls with only ropes as support.

These celebrities left the comforts of their lavish lifestyle to know what it’s like living a country life. This made Las Haciendas the ideal location for the episode. The resort farm offered them a close-to-nature experience with its gently rolling terrains, natural ravines, and gullies densely covered with big trees and native vegetation. Despite the transition from being princesses to ordinary individuals, the three world-class challengers got to enjoy the comfort and rustic appeal of the resort farm. They got to frolic in the fresh water of the gushing waterfalls during breaks and smelled the rustic breeze of Las Haciendas’ air. More importantly, they had time to relax in the cozy country haven, a rare opportunity for celebrities like them.
